Getting Rid of the Stump

Stump grinding in Newport Beach often follows a tree removal, sometimes done by another crew, or comes after the stump has sat in the yard for years. A stump is a tripping hazard, a lawnmower obstacle and a magnet for termites and fungus. Grinding chews it into chips below the soil line so you can plant, lay sod or pour over the spot. It is faster and far less disruptive than digging a stump out.

How grinding works

A grinder has a heavy wheel set with carbide teeth. The operator swings it side to side across the stump, lowering it a little with each pass until the wood is gone to the target depth. What remains is a hole full of wood chips mixed with soil. Large roots running away from the stump are left in the ground to decay unless you ask us to chase specific surface roots.

How deep to grind

  • For lawn or sod: a few inches below grade, enough for topsoil and turf
  • For new planting: deeper, so a new tree or shrub has room for its root ball, and ideally offset from the old stump
  • For hardscape: deeper again, with the chips removed and the hole backfilled and compacted

Access on coastal lots

Many backyards here are reached only through a narrow side gate or a set of steps. We use compact grinders that fit through standard gates, and protect pavers, artificial turf and pool coping with plywood and mats as the machine moves through. On a slope or a terrace with no access at all, we explain the options, which may include cutting the stump flush instead.

Before we grind

A grinder throws chips and reaches into the soil, so we check for what is buried around the stump: irrigation lines, low-voltage lighting, gas and electric lines. Call 811 to have public underground utilities marked before digging. Private lines, such as a sprinkler run or a line to a pool heater, are not marked by 811, so point out anything you know of.

Palm stumps

Palms do not have one big taproot. They have a mass of thin roots, and their stumps are fibrous rather than woody. They grind differently, more like a dense mat, and often leave a shallower hole. Some owners leave palm stumps to break down, but in a lawn or planting bed, grinding is the clean answer.

Chips and backfill

The grinding leaves a mound of chips that is often larger than the stump looked. You can keep them as mulch, have us backfill the hole with them, or have them hauled away and the hole filled with soil. Wood chips settle as they break down, so a chip-filled hole will sink over time and may need topping off. Each option is a line on the estimate.

How Stump Grinding Goes

1. Measure the stump

We measure across the widest point at ground level, check access and ask what will go in the spot.

2. Mark what is buried

811 marks public utilities, and we note sprinkler lines, lighting and anything private you know of.

3. Grind

The stump is ground to the agreed depth, with nearby surfaces shielded from flying chips.

4. Finish the spot

Chips are raked into the hole, left as mulch, or hauled away and replaced with soil.

Stump Grinding Questions

How much does stump grinding cost?

HomeGuide lists $120 to $400 for a first stump, and $30 to $60 for each additional one on the same visit. Large stumps and tight access cost more.

Is stump grinding better than stump removal?

For most yards, yes. Grinding is quicker, cheaper and leaves a small hole. Digging out the entire stump and root ball takes heavy equipment and leaves a large hole to fill, and is mainly needed for foundations or certain construction.

Will the roots grow back after grinding?

Most trees will not regrow once the stump is ground below grade. Some species can send up root sprouts for a season; cutting them back as they appear usually ends it.

Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?

You can, but it is better to plant a few feet to the side, where the soil is not full of decaying wood and old roots. If it has to go in the same spot, we grind deeper and remove the chips.
