Ocean Views and the Trees That Frame Them

In Corona del Mar, a call about tree removal usually starts with a view. The neighborhood covers the seaward face of the San Joaquin Hills, and many homes in Harbor View Hills and Irvine Terrace look out over the ocean, Balboa Island or Newport Harbor. When a pine, eucalyptus or ficus grows into that sightline, owners want it fixed. Sometimes that means taking the tree out; often it means opening the canopy without wrecking the tree, which is what view restoration pruning is for.

Three different housing pockets

The Flower Streets near Pacific Coast Highway are the older part of Corona del Mar, with detached homes set close together. Here the challenge is space: trees sit near walls, roofs and the neighbor's yard, so every limb has to be lowered or dropped with care.

Harbor View Hills has newer California ranch homes, many with wide ocean views. These lots often carry larger trees planted decades ago that have since grown into the view. Irvine Terrace mixes newly built homes with original mid-1950s houses, so you see both mature trees from the first landscaping and young plantings around new construction.

How we restore a view

Topping, which cuts a tree flat across the top, is the quick answer and the wrong one. It leaves stubs that rot and pushes out weak sprouts that grow back fast. Newport Beach's own view policy, Council Policy G-3, describes topping as often unattractive and injurious to trees. On private trees we use other methods:

  • Crown thinning removes select inner branches so you can see through the canopy.
  • Crown reduction shortens leaders back to a lateral branch, lowering height while keeping a natural shape.
  • Windowing opens a specific gap where the view matters most.
  • Crown raising lifts the lower limbs so you look under the canopy.

We often combine two of these and plan a follow-up visit, because one heavy cut tends to trigger fast regrowth.

City trees on the Flower Streets

Some trees here belong to the City and are protected. Council Policy G-1 names the trees on Ocean Boulevard in Corona del Mar as Landmark Trees, and lists Goldenrod Avenue and the Corona del Mar State Beach area among Neighborhood Trees. Policy G-3 also bars new parkway tree planting in the 200 blocks of Carnation, Jasmine, Larkspur, Marigold and Orchid Avenues. If a street tree is the one in your view, the request goes to the City, not to us. We handle the trees on your lot.

Neighbor trees and views

Often the tree in your view is in a neighbor's yard. We can only work on a tree with the owner's permission, so the best results come when neighbors agree on a plan. We are glad to walk both yards, explain which cuts would open the view and how the tree will look afterward, and put the scope in writing for both owners.

Gardens and salt air

Sherman Library and Gardens on East Coast Highway has grown desert and tropical plants here since 1955, which says a lot about what thrives in this climate. Salt air and steady breezes can brown the windward side of some trees and dry out shallow-rooted plantings. If a tree is thinning or dropping limbs, a tree health care visit can sort out whether it needs water, pruning or replacement. Call (949) 740-0499 to set it up.

Corona del Mar Questions

Will view pruning kill my tree?

Not when it is done with proper reduction and thinning cuts and without removing too much at once. Topping is what tends to damage trees, and we do not top.

The tree blocking my view is my neighbor's. Can you help?

We need the owner's permission to touch the tree. We can meet with both of you, explain the options and put a written plan in front of both owners.

How long does a view restoration cut last?

It varies by species and how fast it grows. Many owners schedule a lighter maintenance cut every year or two to keep the view open.
