Pruning Mature Shade Trees
Tustin calls itself the City of Trees, so tree removal here is weighed carefully against caring for big, old shade. Columbus Tustin founded the town in 1868 and planted many trees along the streets, adding to the sycamores and oaks that already grew here. Older neighborhoods like Old Town and Tustin Meadows/Peppertree/Laurelwood have mature canopies, and tree trimming keeps them strong as they age, so removal stays a last resort.
What good trimming does for an old tree
A large shade tree needs less than people think, but it needs the right cuts:
- Deadwood removal: dead limbs fall without warning and invite decay.
- Clearance: limbs kept off the roof, away from the chimney and above the driveway.
- Weight reduction: shortening long, heavy limbs that reach out over the house or street.
- Structural work: dealing with weak V-shaped unions before they split.
We avoid removing more than is needed. Taking off too much live canopy at once can stress an older tree and trigger a flush of weak sprouts.
Sycamores and oaks
Native sycamores and oaks are part of Tustin's history. Both can live for a long time if their roots are left alone. Most of their feeding roots are in the top foot or two of soil, and grade changes, trenching or new paving under the canopy can harm them years later. If you are planning construction near a mature oak or sycamore, call us before the work starts so we can talk about protecting the root zone.
Newer neighborhoods too
Tustin also has newer areas like Tustin Ranch and Tustin Legacy, which was built on part of the former Marine Corps Air Station that closed in 1997. Young trees there benefit from structural pruning in their first ten years, which sets up a strong shape and avoids bigger problems later. Many of these neighborhoods have HOAs with landscape rules, so check before removing or replacing a tree.
Warmer inland summers
At about 138 feet of elevation and farther from the coast, Tustin is warmer than the beach towns. August highs average about 87 degrees, and most of the roughly 14 inches of yearly rain falls in winter. Heat and dry soil stress trees, so we often check for water stress and pests during a trim.
Structural pruning for young trees
The cheapest tree care is the work done early. A young tree with two competing leaders, crossing branches or a low limb aimed at the house is easy to correct when branches are thumb-sized. The same correction on a mature tree means big cuts and big wounds. In Tustin Ranch, Tustin Legacy and other newer areas, a light structural prune every few years while trees are young sets them up to become the kind of shade trees older Tustin neighborhoods are known for.
City trees
Street trees in the parkway may belong to the City. Contact the City about those before anyone prunes them. For your own trees, call (949) 740-0499 and we will set up a visit.

Tustin Questions
How much of my tree should be trimmed at once?
Usually far less than people expect. For a mature tree, we remove deadwood and make targeted cuts rather than taking off a large share of live canopy.
I'm adding a room near an old oak. What should I do?
Call before construction. Protecting the root zone from trenching, grade changes and heavy equipment matters more than any pruning.
Can you trim the street tree in front of my house?
If it is a City tree, contact the City first. We work on trees on your property.
