Palms Are Not Trimmed Like Other Trees
Palm tree trimming in Newport Beach covers some of the most recognizable trees in town: tall Mexican fan palms along streets, wide Canary Island date palms in front yards, and queen and king palms around pools. A palm grows from a single bud at the top of the trunk. It does not branch, it cannot heal a wound the way a hardwood does, and every frond it keeps is feeding it. That changes how a palm should be trimmed.
What comes off
- Dead and hanging fronds: brown fronds that are a fire and pest refuge and can fall in wind
- Seed pods and fruit stalks: heavy clusters that drop seeds and fruit on decks, pools and cars
- Old frond bases (boots) that are loose: only the ones ready to come away, not ones still firmly attached
- Skirts on fan palms: the thick layer of dead fronds that hangs below the green crown, which can harbor rats
What stays on
The green fronds stay. Cutting a palm down to a few upright fronds, sometimes called a hurricane cut or pineapple cut, leaves it short of the leaves that feed it and can thin the trunk at the top over time. A healthy palm should still have a full, rounded crown when we leave. We remove fronds that are dead or clearly declining, and in most cases those hanging below horizontal.
Why we avoid climbing spikes on healthy palms
Climbing spikes punch holes into the trunk. A palm has no way to close those wounds, so they stay as permanent entry points for disease and pests. We use a lift where it can reach and climbing gear that does not puncture the trunk where it cannot. Spikes are reserved for palms that are coming down.
Palm types we see most
- Mexican fan palm: very tall and slender, with a skirt that builds up if left alone
- Canary Island date palm: heavy, wide crown with sharp spines at the frond base and large fruit stalks; trimming takes time and care
- Queen palm: fast growing, messy fruit, fronds that hang and brown quickly, common beside pools
- King palm: cleaner, often shedding its own fronds, but still dropping seed clusters
- Fan palms and smaller palms in planters and courtyards
How often
HomeGuide suggests trimming palms once or twice a year depending on species, climate and condition. Along the Newport coast, many owners schedule a cleanup before the dry, windy part of autumn and another when seed pods and dead fronds have built up again. Trimming more often does not make a palm grow faster.
Tall palms and access
The tallest fan palms on narrow lots, harbor fronts and hillside yards are where most of the work lies. Debris has to be lowered without hitting roofs, glass railings, pool equipment or boats, and on Balboa Island or the Peninsula it often goes out by hand. We plan the drop zone and protection before anyone goes up, and we say in the estimate how the debris will leave the property.
Palms near lines
Palm fronds that reach toward overhead power lines are a specific hazard. Cal/OSHA rules keep workers who are not qualified line-clearance trimmers at least 10 feet from lines up to 50,000 volts. If your palm is that close, we will refer you to the electric utility rather than climb it.

How Palm Trimming Works
1. Count and measure
We note each palm's species and height, the fruit and frond load, and anything below it that needs protecting.
2. Check for lines
Any palm reaching toward overhead power lines is flagged for the utility instead of our crew.
3. Trim from a lift or rope
Dead fronds, pods and stalks come off and are lowered into a planned drop zone.
4. Haul and clean
Fronds are bundled and hauled, and pools, decks and walks are cleaned.

Palm Tree Trimming Questions
How much does it cost to trim a palm tree?
HomeGuide lists $75 to $400 for a palm 15 to 30 feet tall and $150 to $900 for one 30 to 60 feet tall. Canary Island date palms usually land toward the high side because of their size and spines.
Should palm trees be trimmed every year?
Most palms here benefit from a trim once or twice a year. Queen palms and Canary Island date palms tend to need it more often than king palms, which shed many of their own fronds.
Is it bad to cut off green palm fronds?
Yes, in most cases. Green fronds feed the palm. Over-trimming down to a few upright fronds weakens it over time. We take dead fronds, ones clearly declining, and fruit and seed clusters.
Can you remove the seed pods before they drop?
Yes. Seed pods and fruit stalks can be cut while they are forming, which saves cleanup on pool decks and driveways. It is a common reason for a mid-year palm visit.
