Hillside Homes Next to Wildland
Tree removal in Newport Coast is shaped by the hills. The Irvine Company built Newport Coast as a master-planned community in the San Joaquin Hills above Crystal Cove State Park, and the area joined the City of Newport Beach in the early 2000s. Many homes back onto canyons and open slopes with chaparral, so removing or trimming trees here is often about defensible space as much as looks.
Defensible space and your trees
CAL FIRE's defensible space guidance, based on Public Resources Code 4291, covers 100 feet from the home or to the property line. A few of the tree points that matter most on a Newport Coast lot:
- Remove branches within 10 feet of a chimney or stovepipe outlet.
- In the zone within 30 feet of the house, keep branches at least 10 feet from other trees and clear dead material.
- Limb trees up at least 6 feet from the ground.
- Leave vertical space between shrubs and the lowest branches, at least three times the shrub's height.
- On steeper ground, spread trees farther apart: CAL FIRE suggests 10 feet between trees on slopes under 20%, 20 feet on 20-40% slopes and 30 feet above 40%.
Your HOA, the City's fire department and the state's fire hazard maps may add rules for your specific lot, so check those too.
Canopy spacing without stripping the yard
Defensible space does not mean a bare yard. We lift lower limbs, thin crowded crowns, take out dead and dying trees, and remove the ladder of shrubs under a canopy. Healthy, well-spaced trees can stay. If a tree is too close to the house or too dense to manage, tree removal and stump grinding may be the better answer.
Fire hazard maps
The State Fire Marshal maps Fire Hazard Severity Zones as Moderate, High or Very High. State Responsibility Area maps took effect April 1, 2024, and maps for Local Responsibility Areas were released in phases in early 2025. The maps measure hazard over a 30 to 50 year window, not the risk to a particular house. You can look up your address on the state's viewer, and the City can tell you what applies within its limits.
Views from the ridge
Newport Coast homes were placed for ocean views, and trees planted when the neighborhoods were new have had decades to grow. View restoration pruning here usually combines crown reduction with thinning, so you see the water and the tree keeps a natural shape. We also look at slope access: many backyards drop off sharply, which affects how we bring in equipment and remove debris.
Before you call
Have your HOA's landscape rules handy, since master-planned communities often control which trees can come out and what replaces them. Then call (949) 740-0499 and we will walk the lot with you.

Newport Coast Questions
Do I have to remove all the trees near my house?
No. Defensible space guidance focuses on spacing, limbing up and clearing dead material. Healthy trees with good spacing can usually stay. Check your HOA and the City for any stricter local rules.
How high should I limb up my trees?
CAL FIRE's guidance is at least 6 feet above the ground, with more vertical space where shrubs grow below the canopy.
Can you work on a steep back slope?
Often, yes. We plan access, rigging and debris removal around the slope and tell you in the estimate how we will handle it.
